00 ES300 won't idle

motor runs only if we hold down the gas and the RPM above 2k.

Any clues?

it only has 86k on it and is a gorgeous car, but this issue is annoying.

FWIW we just replaced the battery. Car had sat for a while and the old battery was toast.

tried that, still no go.

I also swapped in new plugs (seriously needed them).

I can hold the idle with my foot, but only over 1k.

I also noted that there is what appears to be steam/water coming out of the tailpipe even after the motor is shut off. This leads me to fear a BHG, which isn't the end of the world, but it is a pain.

Coolant in your oil? Oil in your coolant?

Run a compression check to confirm BHG. Otherwise, check all vacuum hoses for looseness, cracks, etc.

Also check TPS.

well I have it idling now, but serious misfiring. it's so bad the alternator can't charge the battery at idle.

I did the old unplug the coil to see if it changes the idle trick and none of the front ones affected the idle. I didn't try the rear ones.
