1987 Door Problem

1987 2wd Regular Cab, Short Bed, 22R

I went to unlock the driver's side door of my truck yesterday and it wouldn't unlock. The door also will not open from the outside or the inside. I pulled back some of the trim and discovered that a metal piece (6 inches long) had broken off. The piece is not part of the lock mechanism but looks like a piece of the interior structure of the door that rusted off. It looks like the opening/locking mechanicals leverage off this piece and without it they won't work. has anyone had this happen to them? Any advice on fixing this or any idea on how much for someone else to fix?

I have this same problem except my plastic keeper piece that keeps the rod in place in the outside door handle broke. I found a replacement at a local auto parts store but it was for GM vehicles and didn't fit.... Does anyone have any advice for this? Ideally a place to get a replacement plastic stopper.

Thank You!!!

I am having the same problem on my '87 2 door. First the interior handle quit working, then the exterior handle quit working. I removed the interior door panel and now open my door by giving the wire/rod a good yank. Replacing the entire door is rapidly moving up my to-do-list.

Wow, old thread.

All those inner door pieces will be dealer only if available at all.

Your best bet may be to find a parts door at a salvage yard.
