Toyota OEM filter from dealer + any API certified 10w-30 that you can afford. Castrol is fine.

Certified sludge monster... use a full synthetic oil always and keep oil change interval reasonable until you inspect for sludge.

Any oil filter will be fine. I prefer ones that have silicone antidrainbackvalves to help reduce cold start clattering.

Personally I don't like Fram oil filters. However I do use their transmission filters and PCV valves.

Try Purolator PureOne PL10241 (standard size) or PL20195 (longer version). Walmart has Motorcraft equivalents of FL910S and FL400S. I personally would go with either PL20195 or FL400S.

In addition to Castrol High Mileage, you can also use Motorcraft 10W-30 synthetic blend from Walmart. Check Autozone for various oil/filter combos.

Napa Gold/Proselect (Wix), Purolator, and Bosch are good filters. Of course OEM (Denso) filters are perfect too.

Any good 5W-30 or 10W-30 dino oil is fine. I prefer Castrol or step up to the High Mileage stuff.

I use Wix or Mobil 1 filters in our cars. For oil I like Castrol GTX, use that in my brother's Xterra, Castrol GTX HM in my mom's quest, Castrol Syntec FS in my dad's avalon and currently have Valvoline Syn Power in my avalon. Mobil 1 oil too, going to be using the HM version in my car next OCI.

I would pull the front valve cover and check for sludge or minor buildup. Then decide from there.

Here's mine, my dad wasn't that great on remembering when to do oil changes, usually 5-8k on dino, haha.

hmmm, I would personally run it on Mobil1 Full Synthetic HM, 10W-30 in Summer, 5W-30 in Winter if temps go down below 0F sometimes.

I would suggest staying as far away as you can from FRAM oil filters (same about regular Purolator) ... go with Mobil1, WIX (Napa Gold), Purolator Pureone or OEM/Denso - they are very decent choices, either of them have regular stock size and a longer version equivalent to PL20195.

Pretty sure that Motorcraft or Bosch filters are good as well, I just don't use them.

Personally I am stocked up with OEM regular size filters so running OCI no more than 5k miles or 6 months (mixed city and highway driving).

do not go over 3 months / 3k miles on conventional dino oils, no matter what they are (Castrol GTX HM is an excellent choice here) or you will most likely make the engine dirty.

~$25 for a 5+ quart jug of M1 oils at Walmart.

Are you saying that photo shows signs of sludge? I had impressions from what I've read of thick gel-like layers of black goo.

Besides pulling the valve covers, does sludge build up elsewhere, and do any of the UOA labs have the ability to detect the beginning stages of sludge formation?

No, haha. I was amazed that there wasn't any at all.

This is sludge in a 1mz-fe.

seems we've got the same deal over there for M1 FS HM jug

mine was $24.50+tax hehehe

but I also took a $10 jug of SUpertech 10W-30 for use with sea foam planning on doing some cleaning soon ... I expect the valve cover gaskets to leak though, they seep already on full synthetic chances are i will be replacing them in Summer along with other crap that comes with it (a whole lot on a V6 hehe)...

Holy $#!+

Was there any liquid oil left in that engine?

What did Toyota change in the next generation engine to make it go away?

hehehe, yeah it gets that bad when neglected

I don't know what they changed in gen5 to make it better, but I know what they changed in gen4 so it can happen. they removed the oil cooler from original gen3 design (both 4cyl and 6cyl) to lower emissions in compliance with some idiotic eco regulations, that's all it takes.

Yeah, same exact price.

I might do seafoam again before the next oil change. Last time I seafoamed was at 117k. Not sure if thats too soon to do.

Haha, I just replaced mine today. I'm surprised at how fast I did it, although spent most of the time getting the old gasket material off. IMO I would just use a gasket and no extra sealant(only specified areas). Just created a mess and did actually seal the gasket, just spread around the gasket(both inside and outside). Save yourself some time.

That's weird. So cooler oil has higher emissions?

Not that it's necessarily related, but I wonder if all sludged engines fail emissions.
